Scarlett was known to us from before she opened her eyes. Her breeders are friends and before we moved from Oklahoma, we were blessed to see her litter grow. After moving to Arizona, we lost our rescue rottie Maverick II to lung cancer. We decided we wanted to breed rottweilers so we contacted Scarlett's breeder; and though they were sad to see her go, let us purchase her for breeding.
Scarlett is an extremely affectionate dog and it isn't odd to find her sitting next to Darcien while she studies for hours. She loves to play with Hallertau and go for car rides. She is curious and we know when she's been lizard hunting in our backyard because her nose will have a dirt ring and a small patch of missing hair where she's nuzzled rocks up in her pursuit of the elusive prey. She is the most alert pup in the house at night and keeps us apprised of potential threats--real or imagined. How did she come by the name The Scarlett Pimpernel--and for that matter her nickname "Scquirl?" Our naming convention for all our pups since 2002 has been Darcien's favorite movies: Maverick (the Mel Gibson and Jodi Foster one), Gladiator (registered name Maximus Decimus Meridius); Hudson Hawk, Maverick II, and Babe. We deviated from convention with Hallertau (see his profile). However, with Scarlett we decided on another movie reference. But how did Scarlett Pimpernel morph into "Scquirl?" One day, early on, Darcien tried to call her by name and at the same time called out "girl." When that happens "Scquirl" comes out of the mouth. |
Life with Scarlett
ProsLoves to be cuddled.
Is fine letting others aspire to "alpha" status. Can let herself (and other dogs) into the house. Keeps us alerted to possible danger at all hours. One suggestion for her soft pallet is food allergies--so far, she is doing better. Loves playing with Hallertau and Rocket (our rescue husky/Great Pyrenees). Is an AMAZING mom to her puppies. Will keep a studious student company during long hours of study. Once a stranger is no longer strange, warms right up to guests. Keeps our floors clear of bug-inviting crumbs. |
ConsDoesn't understand personal space first thing in the morning.
Lives to fill her stomach. Can let herself (and other dogs) into the house--yes, this is both a pro and a con. Can not hike for very long or in the heat due to a swelling in her soft pallet--veterinarians are still offering suggestions as to why. Is shy about meeting strangers. Will volunteer to check the perimeter for weaknesses--usually shortly after the car has pulled out of the driveway. |
