About Us
Spero is Latin for "Hope." |
We've owned Rottweilers since 2002. Over the years, we've owned fully papered Rottweilers as well as rescued Rottweilers. Several years ago, we found Hallertau for sale and we fell in love once more. As we watched our Hallertau mature we realized: not only did we love the breed, but we'd become more and more interested in breeding a quality Rottweiler ourselves. We didn't have papers for Hallertau, so we debated for a couple of years whether we wanted to wade into the canine gene pool.
During this time, and since, we've been researching what it means to be a quality breeder. And we've come to understand that there are about three or four informal classifications of breeders: quality breeding as a lively-hood; backyard breeders as a lively-hood; and the hobby breeder. |
The quality lineage breeder breeds dogs for show, whether they show the dogs them themselves or not. They focus on championship lines and strive for dogs that conform to the specifications of the breed. The quality breeder often breeds working Rottweilers as well--not just for show.
The term backyard breeder denotes breeders who may not worry about whether the dogs they are pairing for breeding will produce a quality dog. Often it is enough that the dogs are registered with a recognized dog registry for the pairing to take place.
The hobby breeder is one who doesn't depend on the sale of the dogs or pups for their lively-hood--though they will always charge for the the dogs or pups they sell--and they may or may not show the dogs. The goal of a hobby breeder is to improve the quality of breed. The hobby breeder does this through research and focuses on characteristics of the sire and bitch that will hopefully pair well to keep the breed line free of major health issues and still conform to the breed standard. The hobby breeder and quality lineage breeder both aim for quality breeding, they simply approach it from different angles.
