Hallertau was the stud fee for his original family. The family who owned both Hallertau and his sire BJ had a medical emergency that made the care of the new puppy uncertain. They decided a new home would be best for him. We at Spero Rottweilers (though we hadn't even thought about a breeding program at the time) fell in love with him and bought him. At first, we thought to merely have a family companion. However, as Hallertau matured we felt he was a good representation of the breed. He has proven to be a fantastic ambassador for the breed, too. People who normally would not approach a large dog find themselves irresistibly drawn to him. And he accepts his adoring public with grace and goodwill. He is confident in his world and therefore can extend his confidence to those he meets.
How did he come by the name Hallertau and what does it mean? We have been avid home brewers of beer, mead, and cider over the past twelve years and Hallertauer is a hop used in brewing beer. The hop originated in Hallertau, Germany. So naturally, we named our amazing dog after something unique. |
Life with Hallertau
ProsHe loves to have fun!
Hikes are a favorite activity. Loves meeting new people. Is healthy, even with his winter weight. Is patient. Plays well with his housemates--especially Scarlett. Doesn't want to go outside when it's cold. Size means less likely to be accosted in a dark alley--if one found one's self in such a situation. Is correctable, even when a guest has him all excited. Eventually shares his toys. |
ConsAt 125lbs his hip checks can be painful.
Eats a great deal of food. Poops a lot. A. Lot. Still thinks he's a lapdog size. Doesn't know his dam's side of the family (this is problematic in knowing what traits lay dormant that he doesn't suffer from, but might pass onto offspring). Takes up the whole bed when he sleeps. Doesn't want to go outside when it's cold (yes, this is both a pro and a con). Is so friendly doesn't realize he's bowling guests over with his exuberance. All toys are his until he's done with them--even if they belonged to another pack mate originally. |
